Celebrating Birthdays at Sanctuary

Peta Yalg • April 15, 2026

Birthdays at sanctuary aren’t just celebrations — they’re moments of connection, belonging, and identity.

At Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure, we love to celebrate all the moments - from small to big. Across our centres, birthdays are celebrated through thoughtful, respectful rituals that focus on each child. Our approach honours each child’s story, strengthens their sense of belonging, and creates meaningful memories.

Why do birthday rituals matter in early childhood?

Birthday rituals help children feel seen, valued, and celebrated as individuals.

They support:

  • a sense of identity (“this is my story”)
  • belonging within the group
  • confidence and self-worth
  • connection between home and the centre

It’s not about the biggest celebration — it’s about meaningful recognition.

What makes Sanctuary birthday celebrations different?

We take a calm, intentional approach.

We focus on:

  • connection
  • storytelling
  • reflection
  • inclusion

Every child is celebrated in a way that feels safe, meaningful, and genuinely special.

birthday rituals at our centres

While our philosophy is shared across all centres, each location brings its own warmth and personality to birthday rituals, reflecting the unique community and environment.

Highfields Child Care Centre

Each room creates its own celebration based on children’s developmental stage:

  • Nursery: First birthdays are celebrated with rainbow photo displays and handprint keepsakes for families
  • Toddlers: Children decorate their own plant pot and choose seeds to grow
  • Junior Kindy: Children create and paint birthday lanterns displayed together
  • Senior Kindy & Preschool: Children design birthday bead creations with their photo, forming a shared display in the room

For the team, birthdays are also a time to connect—with shared cakes, flowers, and special celebrations that bring everyone together.

Sanctuary Ashmore

Celebrations are studio-based and shaped by each group:

  • Jellyfish & Seagulls: Children create and thread birthday beads, displayed alongside their photo
  • Dolphins: A “birthday galaxy” features children’s artwork on star or planet shapes
  • Children often choose how they celebrate—such as a dance party or tea party

Sanctuary Maudsland

Celebrations focus on connection, creativity and shared experiences:

  • Studios include birthday sticks, drawings, and globe-themed celebrations
  • Children reflect on what their birthday means to them
  • Educators and children celebrate together with flowers, cake and shared meals

Sanctuary Buderim

Each studio creates its own unique celebration:

  • Dance parties, tea parties and a personalised sensory box
  • Children receive a personalised birthday cupcake from the centre chef
  • Monthly team celebrations bring educators together

Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct (Southport)

  • Birthday high tea celebrations create a special shared experience
  • Celebrations are held in the multipurpose space, bringing children together in a meaningful way

How birthday rituals support children’s development

Across all centres, respectful practice is reflected in:

  • Environments that feel calm, welcoming and home-like
  • Educators who build genuine, trusting relationships
  • Programs that support emotional wellbeing alongside learning
  • Opportunities for children to express themselves, make choices and feel valued

You’ll see this approach in action at:

  • Sanctuary Ashmore
  • Sanctuary Buderim
  • Sanctuary Health and Knowledge Precinct (Southport)
  • Highfields Child Care Centre
  • Sanctuary Maudsland
  • Sanctuary Redlynch

  • How are birthdays celebrated at Sanctuary?

Through calm, meaningful rituals focused on connection, storytelling, and belonging.

  • Are birthday celebrations the same at every centre?

The philosophy is consistent, but each centre brings its own unique approach.

  • Can parents be involved?

Yes, we encourage family participation where possible.

Our Mid-Year Summative Assessments are now available for families to view on OWNA. These assessments are more than a form. They are built from the Early Years Learning Framework (and, for our Kindergarten children, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline), which sets out the developmental milestones we look for as children grow. Twice a year, our educators bring together everything they have observed, from everyday moments to learning stories and photos, to show where your child is thriving and where they are developing next. You will see your child's strengths and achievements front and centre, along with any emerging skills we are watching grow. Where an assessment shows a child may benefit from a little extra support, that is never a cause for concern. It simply gives us the chance to work alongside you early, so we can put the right support in place together and help your child keep moving forward with confidence. Your child's summative assessment is one part of a bigger picture. Each centre also runs a quarterly developmental monitoring cycle, where educators check in regularly on how every child is tracking against those same EYLF milestones, not just at the mid and end of year points. This means nothing is left to chance between assessments. If something emerges that needs a closer look, our educators can act on it early rather than waiting for the next formal assessment to come around. This ongoing monitoring is what allows your summative assessment to feel like a natural update rather than a surprise. By the time you read it, your educators have likely already been watching, adjusting and supporting your child's development all along, and the assessment simply puts that into words for you. This information also shapes what happens in the room. It helps us tailor our program so it continues to reflect your child's individual interests, strengths and needs. Where it would help, our Diversity and Inclusion Leader is also available to join the conversation, to make sure every child is supported to thrive. As part of a positive transition to school, we ask all Kindergarten families to book a meeting with their child's educator to talk through their assessment. Thank you for partnering with us as we nurture your child's unique learning journey.
